Most of the books represented in this collection are adapted from fairytales, folktales and myths, or follow the basic format of the fairytale.

USM de Grummond Collection - LISL WEIL PAPERS: Lisl Weil was a children’s author and illustrator, most remembered for her ink and felt pen drawings. She was born in Vienna, Austria in , and it was during her Austrian childhood that Weil gained her first interest in the arts, particularly in music and the visual arts.

For instance, Gillie and the Flattering Fox was adapted from an Italian folktale about a vain rooster. A hungry fox captures the rooster by complimenting his singing. The Riddle Monster is a version of the Sphinx myth.

The Boy Who Flew Too Close to the Sun is based on the Greek myth of Daedelus and Icarus.

Most of the books represented in this collection are adapted from fairytales, folktales and myths, or follow the basic format of the fairytale. For instance, Gillie and the Flattering Fox was adapted from an Italian folktale about a vain rooster. A hungry fox captures the rooster by complimenting his singing. The Golden Spinning Wheel and I Wonder Why," Thought the Owl are also adapted from folktales. Weil based The Story of the Wise Men and the Child, and The Very First Story Ever Told, on Biblical stories.

The Golden Spinning Wheel, and The Fantastic Toy Shop combine Weil's love of drawing and storytelling with her appreciation of music.

The first is based on a musical poem by Antonin Dvorak. The latter is based on a ballet by Rossini-Respighi. In both books, Weil integrates illustrations, text and musical notation.

Many of the books written and illustrated by Weil possess a light or comedic theme.

Examples include Ralphi Rhino, Melissa's Friend Fabrizzio, and Shivers and the Case of the Covert Hamburgers. The latter concerns the efforts of a guard pup to capture some clever meal thieves.

The collection contains show material for seventy four titles published between andas well as production material for sixteen titles not verified as published, The Swap Storeplus miscellaneous art. The collection contains typescripts, galley proofs, some correspondence, book jackets, and illustrations done in a variety of media including ink, felt pen, ink and watercolor and some with separations, studies and sketches done in a variety of media, dummies, layouts and proofs. Lisl Weil was born in Vienna, Austria. She attended school there, learning to depict as a child and also gained a love of song that would appear in some of her books.

New Clothes is a history of fashion written for children.

For most of the titles listed above, the collection holds some combination of sketches, preliminary illustrations, and terminal illustrations, almost all made with watercolors.

The number of illustrations for each title ranges from one to eight. For Gillie and the Flattering Fox, the collection also holds a typescript, a galley, preliminary layouts, and an illustration proof.

Weil also illustrated many books for other authors, and materials from some of these books are represented in this collection.

In particular, the collection contains numerous black ink drawings used to illustrate books in the McGurk mystery series by E.W. Hildick.

The Case of the Condemned Cat, The Case of the Snowbound Spy, and Deadline For McGurk are all humorous mysteries involving McGurk and his crime-solving friends. For Deadline For McGurk and The Case of the Snowbound Spy, there are also color separations.

Biographical / Historical

Lisl Weil was born in Vienna, Austria where she began to draw at a very young age.

By the period she was sixteen, Weil's drawings were being published regularly in a Viennese newspaper. At the same time, she was attending art school. She also performed for a time with a dance group. After spending a year in Holland, she moved to New York in She soon met her future husband, Julius Marx, who guided her towards children's literature.

From the s through the s, she estimated that she illustrated more than a hundred children's books--over half of them for stories that she wrote herself.

In addition to illustrating books, Weil also performed with several major symphony orchestras.

As the orchestra played, she drew the story which the music was based on a huge easel. She also danced her interpretation of the story as she drew. In and , she had a weekly television show called "Children's Sketch Book."
